The Science Behind Digestion and Pepsin’s Role

• HCl in the Symbiotic Relationship: HCl, naturally produced by our stomach’s parietal cells, has various functions in digestion. Its acidic nature (maintaining stomach pH between 1.5-3.5) is needed for initiating protein breakdown. HCl helps maintain the highly acidic environment in the stomach, which naturally creates an inhospitable environment for unwanted ingested critters.*
• Pepsin in the Symbiotic Relationship: Pepsin is a crucial enzyme in the stomach that begins the process of protein digestion.*  However, pepsin is initially produced in an inactive form known as pepsinogen. The acidic environment created by HCl in the stomach converts this inactive pepsinogen into active pepsin.
